Vallehermoso – The Heart of La Gomera

Vallehermoso is one of the most beautiful districts on La Gomera. Covering an area of 109.32 km², this district stretches from the north to the south of the island and offers a breathtaking 27-kilometer coastline – including the northernmost point, Ancón Chico Beach.

In the center of Vallehermoso, the Church of San Juan Bautista forms the epicenter of the historic town center, where traditional Canarian architecture with red-tiled roofs and charming houses invites you to linger. Here, you can truly feel the authentic spirit of the island, which is also reflected in the locally produced goods such as palm honey, mistela, almogrote, parra, and goat cheese.

Highlights and Activities:

  • Hiking and Nature:
Vallehermoso impresses with spectacular hiking trails that lead from the mountains to the sea. Alto de Garajonay, at 1,487 meters, offers breathtaking views. About one-third of Garajonay National Park, approximately 1,300 hectares, lies within Vallehermoso – a paradise for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts.
There are also hikes leading to the “Descubrimiento de Vallehermoso” botanical garden, where plants from all five continents flourish and the cultural heritage of the Age of Discovery comes to life.
  • Beaches and Coast:
Popular beaches such as Playa de La Alojera, Playa de Argaga, and Playa de la Rajita offer tranquility and an idyllic atmosphere away from large tourist centers. For swimming enthusiasts, the Vallehermoso Maritime Park provides two refreshing freshwater pools. A unique natural monument are the impressive steep cliffs of Los Órganos, accessible only by boat.
  • Cultural Heritage and Festivals:
Vallehermoso is rich in culture: The charming districts of Triana and Vegueta transport you to bygone eras, and the 16th-century Church of La Candelaria in Chipude is among the oldest in the archipelago. The municipality’s most important festival, the Fiesta in honor of Nuestra Señora del Carmen on July 22, attracts numerous visitors. Every five years, the Fiestas Lustrales La Gomera transform the island into a colorful celebration, during which the island’s patron saint is ceremoniously welcomed in San Sebastián.
  • Artistic Heritage:
Vallehermoso is also the birthplace of renowned personalities such as writers, filmmakers, and poets who enrich La Gomera’s cultural legacy.

Whether you wish to explore the impressive natural surroundings, participate in traditional festivals, or simply relax in the historic town center, Vallehermoso offers everything that makes La Gomera an unforgettable destination.
